Thrummed Mittens – First Progress Report

In my infinite wisdom, and shortly before the start of the Ravellenics, I decided that I should knit myself a pair of thrummed mittens. How long could they possibly take to finish? Two, three days tops? Surely this will be a quick, easy project.

I could not have been more wrong. Yes, the mittens themselves are easy to knit, but making nice thrums has not come easy for me. Making thrums takes forever (if you’re me), and you need about a million of them to knit a mitten.

I made a bunch of thrums ahead of time, and I’ve been watching what I thought was a very large pile dwindle to just a few thrums. I’ll need to make more soon, and I just started the thumb gusset.

I’m convinced all this work will be worth it. The roving I’m using is incredibly soft. I want to rub it all over my face. It’s a chartreuse merino top from Alpaca Direct, courtesy of my mom for Christmas. I started off with 4 ounces, and I’m pretty sure I’ll be using most of it on these mittens. The pattern calls for half that amount. I guess my thrums are extra fat.

The yarn is Malabrigo Rios in “Pearl Ten.” The color is a dark black with a hint of blue. Originally I wanted to use a dark gray, but that color was sold out, so I had to settle. I think this combination looks better, anyway. I’m almost positive I’ll have to put these on hold once the Ravellenics begin. I seriously doubt I’ll have them finished by the start of the Olympics, especially since I can’t knit them or make thrums in the presence of Eva. I mean, what two year old could resist thrums?
