Star Spangled Beanie

Earlier this year, my sister-in-law sent me a picture of a store-bought hat that she liked but wanted to tweak.  She asked if I could make it for her for Christmas, and I said yes, of course.  I put off knitting the hat as long as I could, and I finally cast on on December 9th.  I like to cut things close, it seems.

This project required a TON of knitting.  Like, way more than I anticipated.  The stitches are teeny tiny.  I grumbled through the whole process, but the results are amazing and well worth the effort.

I’m not a fan of flag inspired clothing, but this hat is pretty cool.  I used Cascade 220 Fingering and 2.5mm and 3.25mm needles. The beanie features a turned hem which covers all of my hideous floats from the colorwork stars.  I love turned hems.  I’m going to find a way to use that technique more often.  Instead of coming up with my own chart for the stars, I just swiped this one.  I’m really, really lazy.

006My gauge on the 3.25mm needles measured 16 sts x 21 rows = 2 inches.  Ouch!  I hope my sister-in-law loves it.  I’m going to force her to wear it regardless! 🙂

Ronan’s Football Outfit

On a whim, my sister-in-law and I decided that Ronan needed to be dressed up in a little football outfit and photographed in those delightful newborn poses you see from professional photographers.  I did a little research on Ravelry and found two patterns to modify.  Both pieces were made with Malabrigo Rios in “Coco” and “Natural.”  First, the hat:

I made a ton of modifications to this pattern.  All of them can be found here.  I (poorly) embroidered some laces on the hat to make it look more authentic.  I think it turned out pretty cute!

The soaker got some laces, too:

The photo shoot went incredibly well, considering I was behind the camera.  It would have been easier to pull off had I had full use of my knee, but I did what I could.  My sister-in-law did a fantastic job posing him, holding up backgrounds, and slipping him his pacifier when needed.  Ronan did not behave.  He was crying, grimacing, and/or covering his face for most of the shoot.  Don’t let these shots fool you!

This is by far my favorite. 🙂

I’m looking forward to doing a shoot with the girls once the weather cooperates.  It’s been rainy for the past two days, and we’re expecting more tomorrow.  Maybe I can get some shots of them in their Christmas outfits!
