The Harvest

Eva and I did some impromptu sunflower seed harvesting today. I wasn’t expecting to do it so soon, but the seeds came out relatively easily, and it gave Eva something to do since we were stuck on the porch. (I can’t go too far without Kirsi.)

We ended up harvesting 1.5 heads. The other heads either weren’t mature or were devoured by the local wildlife before I realized they had fallen. One of the heads seemed to be affected by mildew in the center, hence the 0.5. I still have two heads that are attached to living plants, so I may get another chance at harvesting more seeds.

The process was pretty simple: either rub or pluck out the seeds and collect them in a bowl. Eva excelled at this task. She liked running her hands through the seeds in the bowl. I’ll admit, it’s a pretty cool feeling.

I performed a bit of quality control by picking out debris and damaged seeds.

I’m now tasked with dividing up the seeds and roasting most of them. (I’ve received some requests for seeds since the plants were so impressive. The originals came from a $0.99 pack of seeds I bought at Walmart.) This will be my first time roasting sunflower seeds, so I have no idea if I will succeed. Wish me luck!

Weekend Mash-Up

Yes, that is indeed some red hair atop her head. We are a bit surprised and aren’t sure if it’ll stick around.

Snippets of the Past Week

Last week was pretty busy.  For us, that is.  We don’t usually “go out” for activities, but last week we went out twice.  And then Uncle JJ slept over Friday night and played with Eva for most of Saturday.  Needless to say, Eva spent today recovering from all the fun she had.

This did not happen under my watch. 🙂

The weather was finally nice enough for Eva to make use of her porch pool!

Eva tried to put a pretty yellow hairbow in Kirsi's hair so they could match.

If we're lucky, we might get a flower right in the window! 🙂

This Is For The Birds

My mom gave me a bird feeder yesterday as an early birthday present because she won’t be around tomorrow (my actual birthday).

Birthday bird feeder from Mom.

It’s one of those squirrel proof ones.  She also gave me a bag of black oil sunflower seeds to put in it.  I put it outside today, but it’s sort of in a bad location.  I don’t have a bird feeder hanger yet, so I had to put it on a tree limb…that I could reach.

I’m sure the birds will be pleased with the location, but I won’t have an easy time admiring them.  😦

Darby and Xerxes supervised the hanging of the bird feeder.  They’ve been enjoying their fenced yard since we bought the house back in August.

As always, I have some sprout pictures to share:

My peppers finally sprouted!  I was so sure they wouldn’t!  At this point everything has shown some sort of growth expect for the columbines.  I don’t know what’s going on with them.  I’ll give them a little more time before I deem them a failure.
